As well as the environmental benefits associated with converting a fleet to ultra low carbon, there are significant financial savings to be made as well.
The Plug in Car Grant, available from January 2011, will provide 25% off the purchase price of an electric vehicle (EV) up to a maximum of £5,000. There is no vehicle excise duty to be paid on ultra low carbon vehicles, and, perhaps most appealing to those looking for company cars, there is no company car tax to pay for 5 years.
The running costs of EVs are also lower than traditional cars, both in terms of the fuel consumption on a cost per mile basis, and also in maintenance and servicing costs. Additional benefits, such as exemption from congestion charges, free and reserved priority parking areas and, in some cases, free electricity to recharge, make switching to electric even more appealing.
