Matthew Lumsden – Managing Director
With 15 years experience in the low carbon energy and transport sectors, Matthew founded FTS In 2009 to provide specialist consultancy and project management in the field of electric-mobility with an emphasis on the relationship between electric vehicles (mobile energy storage) and energy networks.
Matthew worked in the renewable energy sector from 2000 for 10 years as Business Development and Managing Director of energy consultancy TNEI where he also delivered a wide range of projects primarily focussing on the introduction of new clean technologies and business models including marine renewables, biomass systems, small scale/urban wind and electric vehicles. In so doing he realised that electric vehicles represented a potential risk to grid stability as well as a clean technology and environmental opportunity.
Matthew has a 1st Class degree in Business Administration and spent his earlier career in sales and marketing in the construction industry.
Ian McDonald – Technical Director
Ian leads on technical innovation and implementation within FTS and has a background spanning electrical engineering in both the automotive and energy sectors.
In previous positions Ian was involved in the development of large scale energy storage systems to assist renewable integration and grid support. He is now responsible for leading the energy storage, V2G and other technical development programmes within FTS.
With over 30 years automotive experience spanning Leyland bus and truck division, Formula One, motorsport and most recently as Chief Electrical Engineer at Lotus Engineering, a position he held for 9 years. Ian brings a wealth of knowledge in relation to on-board and off-board vehicle systems and technologies.
Ian was based in Oslo for 2 years working on the TH!NK E.V project and has contributed to other Hybrid and E.V projects including Ecotricity’s ‘Zero Carbonista’ sports car programme. Ian provides essential technical skill sets, specialising in the integration of electric vehicle on-board systems, off-board charging, energy storage and information networks.
Pete Beasley – Operations Director
Pete is a project management and operations professional with fourteen years multi-disciplinary experience.
With a proven track record in project, commercial, supply chain and relationship management with an operational delivery focus, Pete has been responsible for delivering multiple projects through the new product development and introduction phases as a Senior Project Manager at Lotus Cars Limited. He has also managed all aspects of projects for multi-national third party clients, as the operations-focussed project manager for several vehicle assembly programmes.
Pete is for overseeing the programme management of all major projects across FTS, from contracting and liaising with clients to ensuring projects achieve quality, cost and delivery targets.
Gilly Durkin – Support and administration

Gilly’s career spans a range of administrative roles and functions across multiple business sectors.
For 12 years, Gilly worked for regional development agency, One North East as Business & Ministerial Specialist Advisor mainly supporting the innovation teams. Engaging with key stakeholders at a regional and national level, across the public and private sectors, Gilly was highly regarded as the ‘go to’ person who got things done.
Gilly has been involved in the energy and EV sector for some years and plays an important role in all our projects where communication and information is critical.
